Re: NASA Puts Historic Image Collections on Flickr

"The photos are exciting and this means that we'll all be able to use these images in web apps and mashups that use creative commons-licensed images. I'm going to be using them in ecards like this http://kr.ma/5b and the ones shown here http://post.ly/udb2 I look forward to seeing what other people come up with to inspire and challenge mankind. Creative commons FTW!"

Re: Backstory on the Umair Haque hang, plus: why social media is underhyped

"It seems to me you can break down a culture, which on it's own is a dynamic, living thing, into 2 useful divisions: what it is and has been up until now, and what it will become. For integrating new members into a culture (I'm thinking of Joss Whedon show fans as well as Ethan's new employer, HP) you have schema (the Kantian version, I think it is), which is the knowledge that the newcomer is assumed to share with others in the culture, and the knowledge base shared by the existing members. Regarding schema, that's more about hiring and assessing cultural fit and aligned needs, and I'm sure there are tools and advice for that (I don't have much experience there). But, the knowledge base part is where you can find a lot of the tools you were expressing interest in discussing. If the culture is exclusive, inner-culture knowledge will be actively kept hidden from the new member (or it can become part of an initiation test to seek and discover the inside jokes, ideas, and concepts within..."

"hey! you found your shoutout. how'd you find this? just curious... yeah, i bookmarked your site for the next time i have some design/flash work to outsource to you ;) i'm glad to share anything about the site. it's built on django (check it out if you're building web apps). i've just recently ditched the only part that originated on this site (the blog) and i'm using posterous.com for that now. so everything you see here is from social media tools elsewhere on the interwebz... glad you got kate's hello :)"

Re: Music, Technology, Art, Economy

"Man, this thread got very informative. Nice links and analysis, Ethan! The only other thing I'll add is to mention this growing feeling that buying or developing for the sexy iThingy du jour is done in spite of those actions signaling you are supporting or opting into a closed, some argue monopolistic system. The sentiment seems to be, "if I could find other products (or app platforms) that look and work as well, I would choose not to buy Apple and instead support an open alternative...but..." Incidentally, while I was typing this comment, Calacanis' latest mailing list rant entitled "The Case Against Apple--in Five Parts" popped up in my inbox!"

"It makes sense for AT, but does it make sense for developers and users? I'm not sure everyone's on board with trusting that Apple will ever be good at anything resembling and open system. I should mention that while on the treadmill today, I listened to the latest TWiT podcast, which featured a lot of Apple hating."

"Worst idea ever. When I make phone calls, I spend that time preparing my thoughts and emotions for the communication that's about to happen. Imagine a being bombarded with ads before a job interview or announcing the death of a family member. There are some times when distractions are unwelcome, and for me, this proposed ad time one of those. I just got my Google Voice account and I'm really looking forward to playing with the features. I hope this one gets booed off the stage."

"I'm jealous! Riding a bike + bus here as the only means of transportation seems far too scary/unfun. I've come to the realization that the hour + long drive to get anywhere in this city is the root cause of people's lack of initiative to get together. Question for you: do you miss anything about LA?"

Re: http://bryanlanders.com/thoughts/2009/mar/2/free-prius-parking-la-ends/

"Hello, The DMV! Thanks for your comment. Sure, as I said, it was wonderful while the incentive lasted. That's a really interesting point you've raised though. One could say that incentives and regulations are two ways of encouraging vehicles with better gas mileage. I do wonder, however, what the psychological effect of one vs the other has on people. Do they react better to positive tactics like incentives or negative tactics (no matter how necessary and valid) like regulations? For me, one was a gift, and the other is a chore. As a DMV representative, can you offer and info on parking in Santa Monica? Is metered parking still free for Prius owners there?"

Re: http://bryanlanders.com/thoughts/2009/feb/7/social-media-vs-gtd/

"Yes yes yes! You're right, everything is dynamic (ever-changing). And how you do anything can be as important as what you do. And, yes, SM makes more sense as a process rather than an end in itself. Thanks for zooming out the focus...these acronym-ridden methodologies are so damned specific. I think the only thing I'd add is that balance is a wonderful concept when looking at the equation of means and ends. In terms of SM, you've consumed enough when you are satisfied and you've consumed too much when you grow frustrated or overwhelmed and other parts of your life fall apart because you neglect them, endlessly plugged-in!"
