"Man, this thread got very informative. Nice links and analysis, Ethan! The only other thing I'll add is to mention this growing feeling that buying or developing for the sexy iThingy du jour is done in spite of those actions signaling you are supporting or opting into a closed, some argue monopolistic system. The sentiment seems to be, "if I could find other products (or app platforms) that look and work as well, I would choose not to buy Apple and instead support an open alternative...but..." Incidentally, while I was typing this comment, Calacanis' latest mailing list rant entitled "The Case Against Apple--in Five Parts" popped up in my inbox!"

"It makes sense for AT, but does it make sense for developers and users? I'm not sure everyone's on board with trusting that Apple will ever be good at anything resembling and open system. I should mention that while on the treadmill today, I listened to the latest TWiT podcast, which featured a lot of Apple hating."

"Worst idea ever. When I make phone calls, I spend that time preparing my thoughts and emotions for the communication that's about to happen. Imagine a being bombarded with ads before a job interview or announcing the death of a family member. There are some times when distractions are unwelcome, and for me, this proposed ad time one of those. I just got my Google Voice account and I'm really looking forward to playing with the features. I hope this one gets booed off the stage."

"You're preaching to the choir here...I wasn't meaning I feel safer...I'm referring to the early and late majority in the Rogers' bell curve of tech adoption. There are probably no distinctions between open vs closed out there beyond thoughts like, "MySpace seems spammy because I have to interact with strangers and Facebook is just for people I actually know..." And concepts like data portability are nowhere near their consciousness. I know this plenty from giving tech support to my family members!!!"

Re: Music, Technology, Art, Economy
"Gotcha. I would not argue with the openness benefits everyone concept, although I wonder how much of Facebook's adoption is due to it appearing (even feeling) safer because of its closed network. Isn't a common biz tactic to leverage your position until it is no longer profitable (some argue that's why the RIAA is still fighting losing battles)? Facebook can stay partially closed until it is clearly more beneficial to open up...and at that point the open standards (Google's initiatives, etc) will be more wide-spread and reliable."

The strategy of experimenting with different income sources is totally inline with Facebook's style and since it's pretty much a new vertical unto itself isn't this reasonable?"

That kinda thing. I'll leave it to the pros to figure out...and that's the attitude that keeps the transaction costs where they are ;)"

"Great answers, guys. Thanks! Taylor, I had no idea how far down that rabbit hole you had gone. That's interesting about the transaction cost bit. What percentage would you estimate goes to transaction costs (don't worry I won't hold you to it...just curious!)? Re: recruitment effort - that does make sense as long as the acquired employees are interested in being eaten by the bigger fish (on the specific terms of the deal)."

Re: Music, Technology, Art, Economy
"Yup, makes sense. Gobble up a complementary service (and employees) to grow quicker and fuel your primary biz. Wouldn't it be true that if the cost of acquisition is greater than the cost of allocating current (or expanded) resources to achieve similar results, than it's not worth it to acquire? Or or do you need an even bigger ROI with an acquisition? Are people good at assessing what it costs to DIY?"

Re: Music, Technology, Art, Economy
"Ah, right...I should express that I actually don't think product has to be THE most important thing (did I just say that...uggg)! Well, maybe for long-term sustainable success, but there's certainly the possibility of achieving success with a crap product (with great branding, a viral campaign, etc). Of course, if you're Radiohead with Radiohead's following and options available, you'll have a much better chance than less successful bands of greatly increasing your returns on investments in non-traditional marketing/biz models. I completely agree on the investing money more smartly. What do you invest in? Part of a solid strategy would to leverage the hell out of cheap/free techniques that weren't possible when brands more than a couple of years old were created. Crowdsourcing, opensourcing, or simply utilizing social networks or social customer service networks (Get Satisfaction rocks!) are just some of the ways brands can have unprecedented access to potential and existing customers..."

Re: Music, Technology, Art, Economy
"Makes me wonder if we're really examining how product quality factors in here...Google and Zappos have some freaking brilliant core services/products, so foregoing extensive ad/PR efforts is both possible and beneficial. BUT, if your service/product isn't innovative, smart, and in a place visible (or at least discoverable) by your target audience then maybe ads and PR might be necessary to gain some momentum. Think about how everyone points to Radiohead as proof that their exact revenue model is plausible for all musicians...but, all musicians are NOT Radiohead!"
